Copper is a recycled and recyclable product. New copper gutters are made from copper that is over 75% recycled.
When water sits in a copper gutter, it does just that: sit. Copper does not corrode easily. Copper gutters can also last 100 years, or more, which means less garbage filling our landfills.
Galvanized or bonderized gutters last approximately 15 to 25 years. They also must be painted or their lifespan is considerably shortened. Due to their short lifespan, you would have to replace galvanized gutters four times, before you even thought about replacing copper gutters.
When water sits in a galvanized gutter, much of what happens depends on what else is in the water; leaves? pine needles? bird droppings? salt? Anything that has any sort of acid in it (leaves, pine needles, bird droppings) will accelerate the process of rusting as will salt.
If you live near the ocean, you definitely need copper gutters, as galvanized or bonderized just won’t last.
Copper gutters, also, never need to be painted. Can you say “Amen!”?
Depending on the environment, copper will patina naturally and is quite beautiful. For those who desire the look of very aged copper, it can be “aged”, quite quickly, with achemical process that looks awesome and authentic.
If you are building a new home, or replacing a roof and are putting on a long life roof (30 years or more), consider the cost of having to replace the gutters before the roof is replaced: The first two rows of the roofing material would have to be removed and replaced; landscaping would have to be protected or replaced; if you have a two story home, you may have to erect scaffolding to accomodate the workers and you also have to pay for the new gutter and installation, all over again.
As you can see, the costs of replacing galvanized or bonderized gutters can be much more than the money saved to purchase them, rather than copper gutter.
