An article, in the June 2008 publication of Metal Architecture, confirms that the EPA has announced that copper, due to its antimicrobial properties, which kill more than 99.9 percent of bacterial contamination within two hours of exposure, is a legitimate weapon in fighting the spread of Staphylococcus aureus, Enterobacter aerogenes, (super-bug)methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli O157:H7 and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

Preliminary testing has proven copper to also be effective against other harmful fungal and microbial organisms, including Aspergillus niger (black mold), Influenza A and Legionella pnuemophila.

Why is this important? Everyone signing in, or out, at a hospital or doctors office or school, or picking up food at a restaurant, or simply cooking dinner at home, touches the countertop. If they are a carrier of a harmful organism, chances are, they just deposited it on the counter. Anyone who touches the counter, after the carrier, has now picked up the organism, which they now can spread, or be sickened by.

Uncoated copper counter tops can kill more than 99.9% of these harmful organisms within two hours of the organisms contact with the copper, without risk of exposure to toxic or harmful chemicals, which is also much better for the environment.
